Basic Info

Farrells is an international firm of architects, urban planners and designers, founded by Sir Terry Farrell in 1965. With headquarters in London, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, the firm is a group of diverse talent that has delivered a broad range of projects worldwide.

We work at all scales and sectors; including urban masterplans, cultural, civic, transport-related infrastructure, residential and mixed-use commercial complexes. We are committed to creating innovative, social, and transformative architecture that sustainably connects people, the community and the environment.

For clients who care about creating significant places that work brilliantly, Farrells is the right choice of partner. The Farrells approach to design draws upon a 60-year heritage of leadership within the built environment industry.

That experience means we can see the big picture, offering end-to-end service from initial concept to completion of landmarks that work for investors, the people who use them, and the city.

Why work with us

Farrells are renowned for delivering solutions through a combination of vision, commitment and advocacy. Architecture combined with sensitivity to site, context and history are particular concerns of the practice. Our design approach is founded on innovative technical and conceptual thinking rooted in site analysis, an understanding of the client’s objectives, the history and context of the area, and recognition of the needs and aspirations of all users.

Sustainable development is about minimising environmental impact whilst meeting economic expectations and bringing wider social benefits to occupiers, neighbours and local communities.

Over more than 60 years in practice we have built a portfolio that reflects a wide range of styles, but is united by a consistent approach rooted in deep research into the context and history of a given place, contributing to the popularity, commercial value, resilience and sustainability of the final product.

In the early years of the practice, Farrells’ work was almost entirely in London. The firm’s distinctive and innovative approach subsequently led to numerous international commissions and the successful delivery of projects in cities worldwide.

Chelsea Waterfront Redevelopment

Chelsea Waterfront Redevelopment

January 1996 - January 2025

The re-development of the landmark Lots Road power station and its site is a benchmark scheme illustrating how high quality design and urban planning can make the best of limited land resources. It responds to the UK government’s agenda on regeneration of industrial land by delivering world class design on an important brownfield site. The power station, built in 1904, occupies a highly visible location in a wide concave bend of the River Thames, which, after a century of industrial use, has remained largely undeveloped. The mixed-use scheme for a site split between the two boroughs Kensington & Chelsea and Hammersmith & Fulham (the boundary running through the centre line of Chelsea Creek, an historic waterway) includes 821 apartments, with small commercial units and retail outlets for neighbourhood shops. The scheme incorporates both private and affordable housing as well as improvements to public amenities.

M十 Museum of Visual Culture

M十 Museum of Visual Culture

January 2013 - November 2021

Herzog & de Meuron + TFP Farrells were selected unanimously by an International Jury Panel to design M+, the new flagship museum for visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), Hong Kong. Situated on the waterfront of Victoria Harbour at the edge of a planned 14-hectare park, M+ will be one of the first projects to be completed in the West Kowloon Cultural District. Its design will make it a key venue in creating interdisciplinary exchange between the visual arts and the performing arts in Asia. Not just another museum in Hong Kong but a cultural hub for the 21st century focusing on art, design, architecture and the moving image, M+ will embrace the entire spectrum of spaces, means of display and activities related to exhibiting and viewing these media. M+ will provide space for artists to meet, exhibit and experiment, as well as housing a world-class permanent visual culture collection.
